Sarah's Story

How Volunteering Changed My Life

Disabled senior grandpa on wheelchair with grandchild and mother in park, Happy Asian multi generation family having fun together outdoors backyard, Grandpa elderly and little child smiling and laugh.
Chapter 1

Meet Sarah Chen

High School Junior, Age 17

"I was just a shy high school student when I first heard about ACS. My grandmother had always told me stories about helping others, but I never thought I could make a real difference. That all changed when I decided to volunteer at our community center."

"The moment I walked through those doors, I knew I was home."

Sarah's Volunteer Journey

First Steps

Started with weekly tutoring sessions for younger students

Growing Passion

Expanded to elderly care visits and cultural events

Leadership Role

Now leads youth volunteer programs

Building Community

"Through ACS, I've learned that volunteering isn't just about giving back – it's about building connections. I've tutored kids who remind me of my younger self, supported elderly community members who share incredible wisdom, and worked alongside other volunteers who've become my closest friends."

"ACS didn't just teach me about community service – it taught me about myself. I discovered leadership skills I never knew I had, and most importantly, I learned that every small act of kindness creates ripples that touch lives far beyond what we can see."

Chapter 3

Looking Forward

"Now as I prepare for college, I know that my volunteer work with ACS has shaped who I am and who I want to become. I'm planning to study social work and someday return to lead programs that help other young people find their voice and make their mark on the community."

Sarah's Advice for New Volunteers:

  • Start small – even one hour a week makes a difference
  • Be open to learning from everyone you meet
  • Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone
